The Chatham Players will hold auditions for “The Other Place” by Sharr White on Wednesday, November 4 and Thursday, November 5 at 7pm at The Chatham Playhouse, 23 North Passaic Ave. Chatham, NJ. Actors must check in to the auditions within 30 minutes of the audition start time. Alyson Pemoulié Halter directs. Production dates are February 5th – 14th, 2027.
Juliana Smithton is a brilliant research scientist at the height of her career when her seemingly perfect life takes a disorienting turn. During a presentation to colleagues at an exclusive beach resort, she spots an enigmatic young woman in a yellow bikini amid the crowd of business suits. One step at a time, a mystery unfolds as contradictory evidence, blurred truths, and fragmented memories collide in a family cottage on Cape Cod.
Director Alyson Pemoulié Halter seeks four actors. All actors are asked to submit our online audition form (Click Here). Actors will be asked to read from sides provided at the audition, see below. Women auditioning for Juliana or The Woman will be asked to perform the provided monologues as well- they do not need to be memorized. We ask that all actors be familiar with the script. Callbacks by invitation only on Sunday, November 8th. If you are unable to attend the audition dates, we will accept a video submission, but if called back, you must attend in person. To submit a video, please record one of the provided monologues or sides (both if you are auditioning for Juliana or The Woman). Video submissions must be sent to snbpharaon@gmail.com and received no later than 7pm on Thursday, November 5th.
Rehearsal Schedule: Rehearsals will start the first week of December and will begin with Monday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings with additional dates/times added closer to tech week.
Character Breakdown
- Juliana (a believable 52, Female presenting) - Fiercely intelligent and unapologetically complicated with a very Northeast sensibility. A highly successful research scientist in a male-dominated field, her razor-sharp wit and need for control are matched by a deep vulnerability she refuses to reveal. Juliana is funny, commanding, frustrating, heartbreaking, and never entirely what she seems.
*Please note- Juliana never leaves the stage and actresses must be comfortable performing a good portion of the show in heels. - Ian (50s, Male presenting) - Juliana’s husband - an esteemed oncologist and a deeply caring man caught in an increasingly impossible situation. Patient and grounded, Ian must navigate the shifting reality of the woman he loves while confronting the unraveling of their marriage.
- The Woman (25-35, Female presenting)- Requires a versatile, grounded actress to play multiple characters in Juliana’s world, including Dr. Cindy Teller, Juliana’s estranged daughter, Laurel, and an unnamed woman who conveys the utmost empathy to a stranger in a highly emotional exchange.
- The Man (35-45, Male presenting) - A small but incredibly important featured role, The Man inhabits several men who intersect with Juliana’s life, including Richard Sillner-her research assistant, and Bobby, a caring nurse. Must be able to find the hurt and anger of Richard and exude warmth and compassion as Bobby.
