A Christmas Carol (2020)

The Chatham Community Players safely keeps their longstanding holiday tradition alive with a special streaming production of “A Christmas Carol” airing on Tuesday, December 15 and running until Thursday, December 31, 2020. Our production is an original musical version of the Tale, adapted from the Dickens text and Charles Dickens letters and journals, by Philip Wm. McKinley and Suzanne Buhrer. Returning to the Chatham Playhouse, Susan Speidel of Springfield directs/choreographs the show and Jack Bender of Jersey City is the musical director.

In this version, produced exclusively at the Chatham Playhouse since 1988, Dickens serves not only as narrator, but also as a character that befriends Scrooge and walks beside him during his life-changing journey through memories and premonitions. While the script remains true to the original story, the playwright also pulled from letters that Dickens wrote to family and friends. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge has become one of the most beloved of all holiday tales, and this unique production also reminds us that Dickens’ inspiration for penning the story goes much deeper.

“By retelling the familiar tale, in the midst of our own individual journeys and the challenging times of 2020, may we all be given the same chance and hope for the future”, said Director Speidel.

Producer DeVico shared that “this year has been obviously different for most, if not all of us. With that in mind, we are happy to be able to provide a once in a lifetime special engagement of Chatham Players own version of “A Christmas Carol.” This recorded performance will only be available this year, and will never be aired again, as a special arrangement has been made with the show’s creator in order to share some holiday joy with our patrons and community. While we always welcome any donation to help support our theater for years to come, we consider this presentation to be our gift to the community, and don’t want one’s inability to afford to donate to be a barrier to the arts and our efforts. We welcome any organization needing support during this time to reach out so that we can arrange to share our proceeds with them and help further their cause as well.”

This special streaming production of “A Christmas Carol” will begin airing on Tuesday, December 15 and runs until Thursday, December 31. “Virtual” Tickets will be available beginning December 1st. The presentation will be video-on-demand, you can choose to view anytime during the available viewing dates. Once a stream is started, you have 48 hours to complete the stream and can stop/start as needed. A suggested donation of $20 per device (minimum purchase of $2.00 is required to get the stream) is encouraged, but not required. Patrons are welcome to donate more or less and the proceeds from many performances will be split with other charitable organizations.
